• Deactivated my Twitter/X account

From Digital Man@VERT to All on Wednesday, February 05, 2025 18:15:57
I guess this could be arguably politics/debate, but I just wanted to mention *somewhere* that I deactivated my Twitter/X account (@digitlman) last night. No big loss. I would occassionally post new YT video notices or software release announcements there, but that's about it.

I just couldn't stand the thought that my account was somehow adding to the numbers that supported Elon Musk and own private BBS/platform. Fuck that guy.
I encourage you to consider doing the same...

I just stopped using it or clicking on
any links to it since requiring to log
in for almost everything (almost.. you
can still read linked Xweets or
whatever). Fuck logging in to web stuff
:D. And I haven't had it on my phone or
    other devices since they stopped
allowing 3rd party apps however long

Really, though, fuck all that social

I deleted mine within a week of him purchasing it. Seriously considering doing the same to Facebook (again). Took a three year hiatus from it a few years ago...created another account about the time that I shut down Twitter. Should have left well enough alone. The break was the best thing for me. :)

big loss. I would occassionally post new YT video notices or software release announcements there, but that's about it.

That was the only reason I got a Twitter account to begin with... to post
YT video notices... but I did eventually get to following a few accounts,
like MeTV, Fleisher Cartoons, and the Onion.

I stopped posting notices a while back.

His buying it didn't bother me at all, and I admit somewhat enjoying the exposure of "shadow banning" and the outing of the antifa kiddie porn rings that soon followed. I have never really cared for him as a person, though,
and the idea of him being involved in government is not to my liking.

There is a newish, Twitter-like platform called BlueSky. Most of the
accounts I was following on X either cross-post to BlueSky or have moved
    over all together. https://bsky.app

you shouldn't encourage anybody to do anything. they can make their own decisions. why do they need encouragement?

They don't. I guess what I meant to say was: reconsider your Twitter/X account - if you don't really need/want and would like to see Elon eat shit sooner than later, consider deactivating your account. That's all.

If you like/use X/Twitter and don't mind supporting Elon's enterprise, by all means, keep the account.

I guess that depends on why you use X or, more importantly, why you'd be dumping it. If you are getting sick of social media in general, then the answer would be no for sure. If you use it to follow a few sources you
don't seem to find (easily anyway) on other platforms, you might.

Never said they weren't. In fact, I said that the break was the best thing for me. I well remember the whole Cambridge Analytical bruhaha. As far as I'm concerned, I can do without any of them. With facebook, I limit the number of people that I have "friended" and I don't click on click bait. I'm there just long enough to check on the family and friends that I do follow. If I get ads or "news" items in my feed, I report them as inappropriate and move on. Give their algorithm something to figure out.

so you liked twitter before which was a propaganda machine?

I'm sure that it was better than it is today. But, I guess I'll never know because I'm not on there. And as far as Facebook is concerned...eh. I could always do what we did before 'social' media...pick up the phone and call my family and friends.

So facebook won't show you that stuff unless it thinks that's what you want. Like if you start looking at videos of big boob asian girls, that is what it will switch to showing you.

So were you obsessed with politics to the point of where it was affecting you and you want to cut yourself off? that thing about ignoring most of your friends is a pretty surprising thing to read too. are they really THAT bad or do you just feel overloaded. my friends dont talk about politics much except for a few people with TDS.

I really didn't intend to make this a debate. Just remind folks: if you have a Twitter/X account, you're helping Elon's empire (even minutely), and if you don't want to do that, consider deactivating the account. That's all.

Then you made a bad move.

Nowadays, leaving X is a political declaration and it will be recognized as such. You may as well place a Yes we Can sticker on the back of your truck. Calling a Deer a Horse and all that, if somebody bothers to remember.

    Black Rock, the coffee company?

I think he means Blackrock, the finantial company that likes shorting on Telefonica stocks so the market value of the firm is bellow 80% of its actual book value. Which is a sure means to flag them as motherfuckers.

and people tell other people to leave. i think these people have been brainwashed.

It happened the same with Freenode, actually, when people started advising friends to leave en masse because rumors they were getting about the new ownership. It was very political. There was a lot of FUD regarding the new management using system logs to chase gays down.

Eventually, Freenode fell because the new management was inept. The herd mentallity of the userbase was disturbing, though.

I'm also on Facebook, but the problem I'm having lately is that my feed
is 100% politics right now from both sides of the political spectrum.
I've snoozed almost 75% of my friends for a month, and it's still politics-heavy.

My Facebook feed is mostly high-school friends who got in early and
didn't experiment with other social networks. I suppose I'm the edge
case, approaching 60 and still experimenting with social networks...

I used all those, along with Orkut, Tribe.net, Friendster, and others that I've forgotten about. The rest of my high school friends weren't as techy and didn't go anywhere except Facebook.

I remember Classmates.com which was kinda the same thing. It was free to join (maybe you still can), and post your photos of yesteryear and then today. If anyone wanted to contact you or comment they had to pay. Almost as good as MySpace.

Yeah, classmates.com is still around. That site seems more intended for people who want to get in touch with friends from high school and perhaps earlier. I've checked there recently, but there aren't many people there from my high school for my graduation year or the years around it.

My high school's web site used to have an alumni page which would publish former students' names and email addresses - though you had to send the webmaster a message to get your name and preferred email address on there. I think that had more people than were on classmates.com, but it still wasn't a whole lot. It seems my high school took down their alumni page though..

I know some people say they're no longer in cotact with people for a reason, but for me, I feel like I wouldn't mind getting in touch with some people again, and there was no particular reason for the lost contact.

classmates is basically a construct to get information and money out of its users. i heard if you have yearsbooks you can make good money selling it to them. i'm not sure you can even talk to a real person in support on that site now, though.

That's where I'm at too (although a little bit younger). Most of my friends hopped on Facebook not long after MySpace started falling apart. Honestly, I just don't have the energy to cut them out, even though I live 1500 miles away. I also haven't seen any of them in over 30 years.

Right now, it's just easier to snooze them or unfollow them (without unfriending) just to keep my feed clean. I don't need to see them all trying to dunk on the other political party. It gets old. So, I seek out cute dog photos. :)

Ohhhhh... tribe.net. I had totally forgotten about them. I actually am sad that it didn't succeed. Early on, it was a pretty obvious successor to USENET, and I'm sad that it never really succeeded. It was truly a flash in the pan: blew up early
