On 16 Feb 2025, digital man said the following...

Wiki edit of http://wiki.synchro.net/dev:chopping_block by digital man: [Graveyard] Receive SMTP mail by user number is now gone

    regarding ident queries..

imo queries make sense to me if you're shelling out from one bbs to another, and could be used just like how irc uses it (block a specific user from a
bbs that behaves crazily, without banning the whole bbs)

perhaps go the other direction (if it's not already there) and allow blocking ip/ident pairs..

not sure why the ircd doesn't use it either.. it's specifically for identifying individuals on multiuser systems

*shrug* as usually "easy for me to say" :) .. just seems like supporting it fits the general concept of sync (which supports finger..)

Did I miss some sort of survey about this or something?

I (was) using this, but I guess I can figure a workaround.

No, but it's been documented as not-recommended, disabled by default and generally a bad idea.
If you really use/need this feature of the mail server (do you?), I would consider adding the ability for *authenticated* SMTP clients to send email directly to user numbers, but that could also lead to confusion (why does this email address work for some senders, but not others?).

No, I don't need it that bad, I was only using it myself and it can easily be worked around, was only using it to sign up to hulu for the 99cent subscription :-) I can easily alias some names for that in the future.. no issue, was just suprising.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure just putting "1@* 1@*" in your alias.cfg file would (as an example) allow receiving email (from anyone) to 1@yourhost.
